DuckWeb Registration Error Messages (Printable)

The following is a list of typical DuckWeb registration error messages.

Common Registration Error Messages

Class Restriction

Stop: This course is restricted by class standing (e.g. Fr, So, Jr, Sr). You do not meet the restriction.

Why you got this message: Many courses have restrictions that are checked during the registration process. You did not meet the restrictions for the course you attempted to register for because the course is restricted by class standing (e.g. Fr, So, Jr, Sr).

Solution: Check the restrictions as listed in the online class schedule or in the “Search for Open Classes” link in DuckWeb (click on the CRN to view the detailed information about a course). If you do not meet the restriction, you will not be able to register for the class.

Closed Section

Stop: This course is full: CRN #####

Why you got this message: You tried to register for a course that is full.

Solution: Use Search for Open Classes to see if there are other sections available and register for a different section. Or continue to occasionally check DuckWeb to see if another student has dropped the course you want, and add if you find an opening. Or select a different course.

If you want to discuss taking a course that is already full and you have made a good faith attempt to add the course through DuckWeb, check with the instructor and academic department that is offering the course. Only instructors/departments can override enrollment limits and many departments do not allow enrollment overrides. If you do obtain permission, the department will authorize you to register; it is then your responsibility to log back into DuckWeb and register for the course.

College Restriction

Stop: This course is restricted by college (e.g. College of Arts & Sciences, Honors College, School of Journalism, etc.). You do not meet the restriction.

Why you got this message: Many courses have restrictions that are checked during the registration process. You did not meet the restrictions for the course you attempted to register for because the class is restricted by College (e.g. College of Arts and Sciences, Honors College, School of Journalism, etc.)

Solution: Check the restrictions as listed in the online class schedule or in DuckWeb’s “Search for Open Classes” (click on the CRN to view the detailed information about a course). If you want to discuss taking a course without meeting college restrictions, check with the academic department that is offering the course. Only that department can override college restrictions. If you obtain permission, the department will authorize you to register; it is then your responsibility to log back into DuckWeb and register for the course. If you are pursuing a major or minor within the college listed, you should contact the academic department to declare your intentions.

Duplicate Course with Section

Stop: CRN ##### is a duplicate course. This course is already on your schedule.

Why you got this message: You tried to add a course that is already on your schedule. DuckWeb will only let you register for a course one time.

Solution: If you are trying to change sections of the same course, first write down the CRN of the course you are trying to add. Then use the “Exchange Sections” menu item in the Registration Menu. To exchange two sections, select the CRN you wish to drop from the list and enter the CRN you wish to add in the field provided. Press the Exchange Sections button to complete the transaction. You will not be dropped from your existing CRN unless you are successfully able to add the other new CRN. (This feature works for any exchange you would like to process: Writing 121 for a different WR 121 or WR 121 for Math 111.)

If you think you should be able to register for a course twice (Music Performance is an example), check with the department for assistance.

Level Restriction

Stop: This course is restricted by level (e.g. Undergraduate, Graduate, or Law). You do not meet the restriction.

Why you got this message: Many courses have restrictions that are checked during the registration process. You did not meet the restrictions for the course you attempted to register for because the course is restricted by level (e.g. Undergraduate, Graduate, or Law).

Solution: Check the restrictions as listed in the online class schedule or in the “Search for Open Classes” link in DuckWeb (click on the CRN to view the detailed information about a course). If you are an undergraduate who wants to enroll in a graduate-level course, please note that registration in a graduate-level course is available only to senior-level students with at least a 3.00 GPA in the last three terms of work. A student may take a maximum of three graduate courses while classified as an undergraduate. Senior undergraduates must request permission to register for a graduate-level course. The student must meet with the Graduate School before the beginning of the term of registration and return the approved form to the Registrar Office.

Linked Course Required

Stop: This is a two-part course; select both the lecture and lab or discussion and then click "Register".

Why you got this message: This is a course that has both a lecture and an associated lab or discussion section; you tried to add only one part of the class.

Solution: Choose both a lecture section and a discussion or lab section (choose one from the list directly below the lecture). If using the “Add/Drop Classes” method to register, enter both CRNs and press submit changes. If using the “Search for Open Sections” method to register, click on the box by both the lecture CRN and your choice of lab/discussion, then press the submit button.

Field of Study Restriction

Stop: This course is restricted by Major or Minor; you do not meet the restriction.

Why you got this message: Many courses have restrictions that are checked during the registration process. You did not meet the restrictions for the course you attempted to register for because the course is restricted by major or minor. Some courses include certain majors and minors and some courses exclude certain majors or minors.

Solution: Check the restrictions as listed in the online class schedule or in the “Search for Open Classes” link in DuckWeb (click on the CRN to view the detailed information about a course). If you want to discuss taking a course without meeting major or class restrictions, check with the academic department that is offering the course. Only that department can override major and minor restrictions. If you obtain permission, the department will authorize you to register; it is then your responsibility to log back into DuckWeb and register for the course. If you are pursuing a major or minor that is required for registration, you should contact the academic department to declare your intentions.

Maximum Hours Exceeded

Stop: This course exceeds the maximum credits for which you are allowed to register.

Why you got this message: You tried to register for more credits than you are allowed to register for. Undergraduate, graduate, Law students, and community education students all have different credit limits and, for some students, different dates at which those limits are raised.

Solution: Register for the maximum hours that you are able, then check the Enrollment & Study Load Limits page for specific information about the maximum enrollment limits and dates that apply to your situation.

Prerequisite or Test Score Error

Stop: You must satisfy the prerequisites to register for this course.

Why you got this message: Many undergraduate courses have pre-requisites that are checked during the registration process. You did not meet the pre-requisite for the course you attempted to register for.

Solution: Check the pre-requisites as listed in the online class schedule or in the “Search for Open Classes” link in DuckWeb (click on the CRN to view the detailed information about a course). If you do not meet the stated pre-requisite, you must complete the pre-requisite before taking the class.

If you think you have transfer credit that should clear the pre-requisite, check DuckWeb to make sure that your transfer work is in the system (in the Student menu, click on “View Transfer Evaluation Report”). If your transfer work is not showing, and if you have requested that a transcript be sent to UO, you may check with the Office of the Registrar. Because of processing time and mailing time, it usually takes several weeks from the time you order a transcript until the work will appear in DuckWeb.

If you want to discuss registering for a course without having the stated pre-requisites, check with the academic department that is offering the course. Only that department can override the pre-requisites. If you obtain permission, the department will authorize you to register; it is then your responsibility to log back into DuckWeb and register for the course.

Time Conflict with CRN #####

Stop: This course has a time conflict with CRN #####. Select another course or rearrange your schedule to add this course.

Why you got this message: You tried to add a course that conflicts with another course already on your schedule.

Solution: Select a different section of the course that you want (one at a different time), or rearrange your courses so there is no time conflict or choose a different course entirely. Undergraduate students are not permitted to register for two courses that meet at the same time (exceptions may be made if two Music classes conflict -- inquire directly to the School of Music). Graduate students may request an exception to this rule (contact the Office of the Registrar for more information). Law students may request an exception to this rule (contact the Law School Registrar for more information).

Dropping Below Full-Time Status After Term Has Begun

Stop: You cannot drop below full-time status using DuckWeb.

Why you got this message: You are an international student or an athlete who tried to make changes to your registration. Because you cannot drop below full-time status after the term has begun, changes to your registration in DuckWeb are prohibited, even if you are not dropping below full-time status.

Solution: International students should contact the Office of International Affairs, 330 Oregon Hall, (541) 346-3206. Athletes should contact Support Services for Student Athletes, Mac Court, (541) 346-5428. Staff in these offices will determine if you can drop below full-time credits or make another change and, if approved, send documentation to the Office of the Registrar for processing.

Dropping Last Class Using Add/Drop Menu

Stop: You cannot drop your last class…

Why you got this message: You are registered for a term and you tried to drop the last class from your schedule using the Add/Drop menu.

Solution: If you are trying to drop all your classes and withdraw from the University of Oregon, you should click on the link Completely Withdraw from the Term(s) in the Registration menu in DuckWeb. If you have questions about implications for the current term or the future, contact the Office of Academic Advising, 364 Oregon Hall, 541-346-3211 (8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday).

If you are trying to drop one class and add another in its place, use the Exchange Sections menu item in the Registration Menu of DuckWeb. First write down the CRN of the course you are trying to add.

Too Many Attempts Made to Register This Term

STOP: You have made too many attempts to register this term.

Why you got this message: You tried an excessive number of times to register for classes (hundreds of registration transactions). Normal course registration activity can easily be accommodated within the set limit. However, students who write computer programs to check for openings in classes or who add and drop classes repeatedly will run into this error.

Solution: Once you "max out" your registration attempts, it is not possible for you to do any further registration for the term. All subsequent adds, drops, credit changes, grading option changes, etc, need to be handled by the Registrar's Office. Before you get to this point, understand how to use the registration system so that you don't get a lot of error messages. See your advisor before you register so you know what courses you should be taking and how they will fit into your degree program. Use your Degree Audit to track your degree progress.

Waitlisting

STOP: Class is closed. A waitlist is available. There are ## student(s) on the waitlist at this time. Select "Waitlist" from the action menu and click "Submit Changes" to waitlist this course.

Why you got this message: You are trying to register for a course that is full but has space available on the waitlist.

Solution: If you would like to add yourself to the waitlist, select "Waitlist" in the action menu and click "Submit Changes". If you do not want to add yourself to the waitlist, select "None" in the action menu and click "Submit Changes". For more information about waitlisting, see How to Use Waitlisting on DuckWeb.

STOP: Class is closed. Waitlist is full.

Why you got this message: You tried to register for a course that is full and has a full waitlist.

Solution: Use Search for Open Classes to see if there are other sections available and register for a different section. Or continue to occasionally check DuckWeb to see if another student has dropped the course you want, and add if you find an opening. Or select a different course.
