Non-repeatable Courses

1. Students who earned a mid-C or better or Pass in a course that is non-repeatable, whether taken at the UO or transferred from another institution, may not register again for the course without petitioning for prior approval from the Academic Requirements Committee through the Office of the Registrar.
2. Students who have not earned a mid-C or better or Pass in any course taken at the UO or transferred from another institution may enroll in non-repeatable courses without prior approval, but no more than three times in total. All attempts (inclusive of all UO grades and marks: A–F, I, N, P, W, X, Y, and so forth), including those prior to fall 2019, are counted toward this limitation. Exceptions to this policy may be granted by petitioning the Academic Requirements Committee through the Office of the Registrar.
3. Credits for non-repeatable courses are awarded only one time.
4. All graded attempts of repeated courses taken at the UO are calculated into the term and cumulative GPAs.

Repeatable Courses

1. Some University of Oregon (UO) courses are repeatable for credit (for example, when the content of the course differs from previous offerings of the course). If a course has been approved by the Committee on Courses as repeatable for credit, any restrictions for the course are listed in the course catalog, including limits to credits and number of times the course may be repeated.
2. Students who have reached the limit will not be permitted to register again for the course without petitioning for prior approval from the Academic Requirements Committee through the Office of the Registrar.
3. Credits for repeatable courses are awarded each time the course is completed, up to the established limits.
4. All graded attempts of repeatable courses taken at the UO are calculated into the term and cumulative GPAs.

O Policy on Repeating Courses [Effective Fall 2016 through Summer 2019]

1. Undergraduate students may not register, without prior approval by the Academic Requirements Committee (ARC)/Office of the Registrar, for non-repeatable courses in which they are currently enrolled or for which they have already earned a C or a Pass (P/P*) or better at UO or from a transferring institution.
2. Students may register, without prior approval by the ARC/Office of the Registrar, for a non-repeatable course for which they have already earned a C- or below or a No Pass at UO or from a transferring institution.
3. All grades for all courses taken at UO appear on both the official and unofficial transcript and are included in the Term GPA calculation. Only the second graded attempt of the repeated course (taken fall 2016 or later) is calculated into the Cumulative GPA. Credit for non-repeatable courses is given only once.
4. Some courses are repeatable for credit if the content of the course differs from that of a previous offering of the course (e.g., Topics courses) or may be repeated for credit for a limited number of credits or a limited number of times. If a course is approved by the Committee on Courses to be repeatable for credit, the description of the course as published within the UO Catalog will state the restrictions for repeating the course. All grades and credits earned in repeatable courses are calculated in both the Term and Cumulative GPAs, up to the prescribed limits.
5. Repeated courses are annotated on the transcript as either being “REPEATED, INCLUDED IN GPA” or “REPEATED, EXCLUDED FROM GPA.”
6. Students receiving federal financial aid should remember that failed coursework is calculated in the overall financial aid Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) review each year, and a student is required to meet SAP standards to remain eligible for financial aid. The SAP is calculated differently than the UO GPA and the UO Academic Standing.

Registration Questions

I'm attempting to register for a course in DuckWeb, but I get a message saying this is a non-repeatable course. I haven't taken this class at the UO, so why can't I register?

In addition to preventing a student from registering for a repeated course, DuckWeb will also block registration under the following circumstances:

• You transferred in an equivalent course from another college/university.
• You successfully completed a UO course that has significant curriculum overlap as determined by the faculty (e.g. Math 243 and Math 425, or EC 311 and FIN 311).
• You have AP or IB scores that are the equivalent to the course you are attempting to take.
• You are currently registered for the course in another term.
• You attempted the course three or more times at another institution (inclusive of all UO grades and marks, i.e. A-F, I, N, P, W, X, Y)
• You have reached the limit on attempts or credits earned for a repeatable course. Refer to the UO Catalog or Class Schedule to review limitations.

The Office of the Registrar can verify if a course or test score overlap is preventing you from registering.

I am a graduate student. How does this policy affect me?

The Repeat Policy pertains to undergraduate-level courses only and therefore will only apply to you if you attempt to retake an undergraduate course (numbered 499 or lower). For questions about repeating a graduate-level course, contact the Graduate School.

I'm currently enrolled in a non-repeatable class, but there is a chance I won't pass. Can I register for the course next term now to hold a seat?

No. The DuckWeb registration will block you from registering for a class if you are currently registered in the same class. After grades are posted, if you received an N, N*, or C- or below in the class, you will be able to add the course if seats are available and you have attempted the course not more than two previous times.

How can I tell if a course is repeatable?

If a course is approved by the Committee on Courses to be repeatable for credit, the description of the course as published within the UO Catalog will state the restrictions for repeating the course. Additionally, course repeatability can be found in three registration-related sites:

• Schedule Builder. When adding a course, the course description box includes repeatability information.
• Class Schedule. Click on a course CRN; if the course is repeatable, the information will be displayed directly underneath the course number and title.
• DuckWeb Registration system. After logging in to DuckWeb and selecting the registration term, when searching for classes, click on a CRN; if the course is repeatable, the information will be displayed directly underneath the course number and title.

I'm struggling with a particular course and have taken it twice, and both times I received an F. Can I repeat the course one more time?

Yes. In this case, since a P, P* or C or better was not earned, you can attempt a non-repeatable course a third time. Grades from all attempts will be calculated in your cumulative GPA.

Also, if you are a financial aid recipient, please note that failed coursework is calculated in the overall financial aid Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) review each year; students are required to meet SAP standards to remain eligible for financial aid. The SAP is calculated independent of UO Academic Standing. Please contact the financial aid office for questions regarding SAP.

I need to repeat a class to meet my major requirements. How can I obtain permission to do this?

The Office of the Registrar can assist you with the petition process.

Will I be allowed to register for a course if I received an incomplete in a prior term?

No. DuckWeb will prevent you from registering for a course if you have an incomplete in the same course. You must work with your instructor (without repeating or sitting in the course) to complete the required work. The instructor will update the final grade; it will be recorded in the term that you registered for the course. Exceptions may be possible for incompletes given prior to 2005 which are permanently recorded on your transcript. The Office of the Registrar can assist you with the petition process.

I transferred a class to the UO, and it is equivalent to a UO course on my transfer evaluation. Can I register for the same course at the UO?

Transfer classes are subject to the Repeat Policy. Your ability to repeat the course will depend on the grade you earned and how many times you attempted the course.

• If you attempted the course less than three times and received an N, N*, or C- or below for the transfer class, you will be able to register for the course.
• If you transfer a class to the UO with a P, C or higher, you cannot register for it again at the UO.
• If you attempted the course three times, you will not be able to register for it again at the UO.

Please note: transfer course grades are not included in your UO term or cumulative GPA.

I want to retake a class at another institution that I already passed at the UO with a P, P*, or C or higher, then transfer that class back to the UO. Can I do that?

No. Although nothing would prevent you from taking classes elsewhere, the UO will not give you credit for the course when you submit your official transcript. Please note: transfer course grades are not included in your UO term or cumulative GPA.

I want to retake a class at another institution that I completed at the UO with N, N*, or C- or lower, then transfer that class back to the UO. Can I do that?

Yes. Students are allowed to repeat classes for credit if they did not previously pass the same class with a P, P*, or C or higher. Please note: transfer course grades are not included in your UO term or cumulative GPA.

I received an X grade for a course and I need this course to graduate. Can I repeat this course?

You will not be permitted to register for this course via DuckWeb. You will need to contact your instructor to determine why you did not receive a final grade. Once your final grade is entered, you would be allowed to repeat the course only if the grade earned is an N, N*, or C- or lower and you have not attempted the course more than twice.

If I receive an N, N*, or C- or lower in a UO course and retake the course at another institution and pass that course, will I be able to retake the course at the UO?

No, once you earn a P, P*, or C or higher in a course, whether it be at the UO or another institution, you may not repeat the course.

If I withdraw from a class and receive a W, and then I repeat and successfully complete the course in a future term, will the W be removed from my record?

No. The UO will not remove marks (W, Y, X,) from a student's record under the new repeat policy. The W will remain on your transcript and is not calculated in your GPA.

Grade Point Average Questions

If I repeat a course in Fall 2019 or later, will it replace a previous grade? 

No, grades will not be replaced.  All graded attempts of graded courses taken at the UO are calculated into the term and cumulative GPAs.  All grades and marks remain on the transcript.

If I repeat a course in Fall 2019 or later will the previous grade be deducted from my GPA?

No, all graded attempts of graded courses taken at the UO are calculated into the term and cumulative GPAs. 

NOTE:  Under the repeat policy effective from fall 2016 through summer 2019, only the second graded attempt of a non-repeatable course was calculated in the cumulative GPA. Effective with courses taken fall 2019 or later, all graded attempts are calculated in the term and cumulative GPAs.

If I pass the class with a P, P*, or C or higher at the UO and take it again at another college and get a better grade, will this count toward my UO GPA and credit?

No, once the course is passed at the UO, students may not receive credit from another institution for the same course. Additionally, transfer course grades are not included in your UO term or cumulative GPA.

If I receive an N, N*, or C- or lower in a UO course and retake the course at another institution, will that replace UO credits and GPA?

The UO credit will be replaced with the transfer course credit, however, the grade from the UO course will still be included in your term and cumulative GPA. Transfer courses are not used to calculate UO GPA. UO Departments may use grades earned in transfer course to determine a student's admissibility or suitability to continue in a program.

If I receive a C at the UO and then retake the course that is required for my major at another institution, can I petition to allow the better grade to count for my major and remove the UO grade from the UO GPA?

No. Courses are subject to the policy regardless of what requirement a student is using them to complete. A decision to allow an exception to major requirements could be made by the department offering that major, but this would not change whether or not courses count in UO GPA.

How are repeated courses identified on the transcript?

Transcrip annotations include:

     G - excluded from cumulative GPA - for courses taken between Fall 2016-Summer 2019
     L - included in cumulative GPA

What if a student repeats a course for which they received a conduct penalty?

Grades recorded as a result of sanctions and / or academic misconduct are included in the cumulative GPA. Conduct grades cannot be petitioned.
