Waitlisting for Classes

If a class marked with a red WL code in the course schedule is full, and you are a current UO student, you can place yourself on a waitlist for any seats that might become available. If a seat becomes available, the student highest on the waitlist will get the seat, provided they meet the prerequisites and restrictions for the course and have a uoregon.edu e-mail account.

Video Tutorial

We ask that you use the waitlisting system judiciously and be sure to remove yourself from all your wait-lists once your final schedule is determined.

Restrictions

  • Waitlists are offered only when a course is full.
  • Waitlists have capacity limits; once the waitlist is full, then you can't get on it until there is an opening.
  • You will not be allowed to waitlist for a class until you meet the prerequisites.
  • You cannot waitlist more than one section of the same course, or a course you are already enrolled in. For example, if you are registered in Math 111 CRN 13781, you cannot be on a wait-list for Math 111 CRN 13800.
  • If a course you have waitlisted becomes available, you must assure that there are no time conflicts with your schedule, or you will not be allowed to register for the waitlisted course. Time conflicts are not checked when waitlisting for a course, but will be enforced when registering for a course.
  • Waitlisting ends at 9am on Wednesday of Week 1 of the term. At that point, all waitlists are purged.
  • Waitlisting is suspended during Fall term IntroDucktion. Lists are maintained in the system during this time, and waitlisting is turned back on in early August following the conclusion of Orientation. All lists from prior to Orientation will be intact.

How to Use Waitlisting on DuckWeb

If a class is full and can be waitlisted, you will see a WL code in the course information.

To add yourself to a waitlist, log into duckweb.uoregon.edu, enter your UO ID (95XXXXXXX) and select Student Menu > Registration Menu > Add/Drop Classes. Then select the term and click the "Submit" button. When you find a waitlisted course you wish to register for, check the box in the "Select" column and click "Register". When the course you want to waitlist comes up, select "Waitlist" from the drop-down list in the action column and click "Submit Changes". You are now on the waitlist for this course.

If there is no "Waitlist" action available in the drop-down list, this means either:

  • Waitlisting is not available for the course or
  • the waitlist is full at this time

Note: If the course happens to have a lecture and discussion or lab section, check the box corresponding to the "+Dis" or "+Lab" you need to waitlist, and not the Lecture CRN.

Your waitlisting status began the moment you select "Waitlist" in the action column and click "Submit Changes". You can verify that you are on the waitlist by looking at your status in the right hand column, which shows you exactly when you entered waitlisted status.

Once You’re on a Waitlist

To check your position on the waitlist, navigate to the Student Class Schedule and from the Add/Drop Worksheet, click View Your Class Schedule > Text Format.

If an opening in your waitlisted course becomes available, an email will be sent to your uoregon.edu email account. Openings occur as other students drop the class, so you could be notified any time of the day or night, even on the weekends. You will have 24 hours from the time the message is sent to register for the course before you are automatically dropped from the waitlist, at which time the next student on the waitlist is offered that open space. (You can get back on the waitlist, but note that you will be put at the bottom of the list.)

When you receive your email notice, read it carefully! Once the deadline has passed, you will not be able to add this course or put yourself back on the waitlist. If you do not wish to add the course, login to DuckWeb and drop the course from your schedule. (See below.)

In the "Add/Drop Classes" menu select "Add CRN" from the action menu for the course in which you are waitlisted. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click Submit Changes. If you are waitlisted in a lab or discussion select "Add CRN" from the action menu, scroll down to the "Add Classes Worksheet", and enter the CRN for the corresponding lecture and then click Submit Changes. DuckWeb now displays the registered status of the class in Status column to the far right.

If the course you are registering for is a lab or discussion that has a related lecture, you will need to register for both at the same time. Choose "Add CRN" from the drop-down list to the left of the lab or discussion you are adding. Do not click "Submit Changes"! First, enter the CRN for the associated lecture into the field at the bottom of the screen. When both the lecture CRN is entered and "Add CRN" is selected in the associated lab/discussion drop-down list, click "Submit Changes".

Congratulations, you have successfully registered for your waitlisted course!

Taking Yourself Off a Waitlist

If for any reason you need to take yourself off of a waitlist, drop the course as you would any other. From the Add/Drop Worksheet, select Drop from Waitlist > Submit Changes. Remember that if you do drop from a course you have waitlisted, you will not be able to get back on the waitlist for that course.

Frequently Asked Questions

Student FAQ

How do I know if a course has a waitlist?

The display pages for both the Class Schedule and DuckWeb "Search for Open Classes" show a note of "WL" in red for courses with waitlists.

Will I be able to see where I am on the waitlist?

DuckWeb will tell you that a class is closed but that there is a waitlist, and DuckWeb will tell you how many people are currently on the waitlist. Once you have added yourself to a waitlist, you can check your TEXT Schedule to see where you are on the waitlist (#1 is the top position and will be notified of the 1st opening available).

How will I be notified if a space comes open for me?

As soon as an opening becomes available in DuckWeb, you will receive a notification e-mail to your uoregon.edu account, telling you which class has opened up and how long you have to register for the class. Note that these openings occur as other students drop the class, so you could be notified any time of the day or night, even on the weekends. Check your uoregon.edu email often to ensure you don't miss your notification.

How long do I have to take the space once I am notified?

You have 24 hours from the time of notification to log into DuckWeb and register for the class.

What happens if I don't take action within 24 hours? Can I get back on the same waitlist?

If you do not take action prior to the 24 hours, you will be swept off the waitlist and the next student on the waitlist will be offered the space in the class. You can get back on the waitlist, but note that you will be put at the bottom of the list.

Can I be registered for one section of a class and be on a waitlist for a different section?

No. If you are registered in one section of a class, such as Math 111, you cannot be on a waitlist for a different section of Math 111. And you can only be on one waitlist per course (you must choose which Math 111 waitlist to be on).

Is there a limit to the number of waitlists I can be on?

Technically, there is not an overall credit limit for waitlisting. We ask that you use the waitlisting system judiciously and be sure to remove yourself from all your waitlists once your final schedule is determined.

Can I waitlist for a class that has a time conflict with another class already on my schedule?

While time conflicts are not allowed on your schedule, you can choose to be on a waitlist even if the waitlisted class has a time conflict with another class on your schedule. When you are notified of an opening, you will have to decide which class you want; if you want the waitlisted class, drop the other one from your schedule, then add the waitlisted course.

I can tell a class I want has a waitlist, but I can't get on it. Why not?

Waitlists have capacity limits; once the waitlist is full, then you can't get on it until there is an opening.

When does waitlisting begin and end?

Waitlisting begins the same day and time as registration opens (Monday of Week 8 during the term prior). Waitlists are maintained and notifications continue to launch through 9am Wednesday of the first week of classes. Waitlisting ends at 9am on Wednesday of Week 1 of the term. At that point, all waitlists are purged.

For Fall term, waitlisting will be suspended during IntroDucktion (summer orientation programs for new students). Lists will be maintained in the system during this time, and waitlisting will be turned back on in early August following the conclusion of orientation. All lists from prior to orientation will be intact.

Why is there a space showing in the Lecture CRN but no space available in a discussion/lab CRN?

Some courses have two components, a lecture and a related activity section, called a lab, discussion, or tutorial. DuckWeb will not allow you to register for the lecture and activity separately, because the class consists of both pieces together or linked. Sometimes confusion arises when students see what appear to be open spaces in a lecture, but can't register for them. This occurs because we place waitlists ONLY on the activity sections of a course. If you are seeing an "open" seat in a lecture, look at the available seats in the related activity sections. If there are no available seats in any of them, then the seat that "appears" to be open in the lecture, is being held for a student on the waitlist for the lab, discussion, or tutorial.

When a seat comes available in an activity section (lab/discussion/tutorial), the next student on the waitlist for that activity section will be notified. They have 24 hours to register for the activity section and lecture together, before the seat is offered to the next student on the waitlist. During the time between which the seat becomes available in the activity section, and that seat is filled, the lecture will appear to have a seat open for registration. That seat is being held for the student on the waitlist, who is now eligible to register for the course.

If several of the related lab or discussion sections have had seats come open, each of those sections will have notified the next student(s) on their waitlist. If this is the case, it may appear that there are multiple openings in the lecture, when there are not. If you want to add a class with a related lab, discussion, or tutorial section, start with that activity section. If there is an open space in a related activity section, there will also be an open space in the lecture for you. If there are no open spaces in any lab, discussion or tutorial, then any seat that appears to be open in the lecture, is actually being held. To register for this course, you will need to put yourself on the waitlist for one of the activity sections, and wait. The Registrar's Office will notify you by email if a space opens that you are eligible to register for.

There is an open space in a lab, discussion, or tutorial that's listed with a different lecture – but it's the same course number. Can't I register for a lab that's open under another lecture, and then have the "open" space in the lecture where the labs are all full?

No. When you register for a course with an activity component (lab, discussion, tutorial), that second course component is tied specifically to the lecture it appears under. You cannot mix and match your lecture and activity; they must be tied to each other in DuckWeb. A lecture may appear open, when in fact the spaces for that lecture are being held for another student. That student has been signed up on the waitlist of one of the activity sections that IS related to the lecture with the seemingly "open" seat. That seat is theirs, and cannot be taken by students not waitlisted for that lecture/activity section combination.

Faculty FAQ

How can I view a list of students on my course's waitlist?

Faculty (and staff with access to departmental class lists in DuckWeb) will be able to view a list of the students on their waitlists in DuckWeb. The waitlisted students will appear in priority order at the bottom of your class list.

Can I reorder my waitlist?

No. Students add themselves to waitlists on a first-come, first-served basis.

Can I increase the size of my waitlist?

Waitlist limits can be raised; see your administrative staff in your department to discuss.

Can I ask my department to give a student an enrollment over-ride?

No -- enrollment overrides into classes with waitlists cause technical problems within the system and for students on the waitlist. We ask that no enrollment overrides are given until Wednesday at 9am of Week 1, after waitlisting is turned off for the term and the remaining waitlisted students have been purged.

Why didn't I receive an e-mail notification that a spot was available in the course?

Usually when this occurs a student does not have a uoregon.edu e-mail account set up. Go to account.uoregon.edu to claim your Duck ID and set up your uoregon.edu e-mail account. E-mail notifications will not be sent to other e-mail addresses per University of Oregon communication policy.
