Other Aid & Assistance

Oregon Educational Aid For UO Student Veterans

Oregon Educational Aid For Veterans is a benefit provided by the State of Oregon to veterans who are not currently receiving Federal educational benefits under any Federal act. See: ODVA Educational Aid Eligibility Information and Forms for more information.

To apply, you will need to complete a Form for Eligibility (1004-M, required only once) and Form for Application (1005-M, once every term). These forms can be found on the ODVA website. You will also need to submit a certified copy of your Defense Department Form 214 (DD 214). If you do not have your original DD 214, you may order one from the National Personnel Records Center (NARA).

The DD 214, 1004-M and 1005-M can be submitted to the Veterans Coordinator at the UO Veterans Affairs Office.

Voyager Tuition Assistance

Voyager Tuition Assistance is a financial aid benefit made available to UO students who:

  • have served as members of the National Guard or Reserves
  • were called to active duty (and served in a combat zone) since September 11, 2001

Contact Financial Aid for additional details.

Tuition Assistance

Tuition assistance is processed through Student Billing on the first floor of Oregon Hall. It is ultimately the responsibility of every student to ensure that she or he can actually receive tuition assistance and VA benefits for the same classes. Do not allow yourself to owe thousands of dollars simply because you were never actually entitled to both benefits! If you are unsure:

  • Contact your Education Officer and the VA Education Office in Muskogee, OK to confirm your right to both benefits.
  • Contact your unit for the necessary forms. (ANG members are usually directed to Virtual Armory.)

Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veterans Affairs (CHAMPVA)

Taken from the VA website: "The Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veterans Affairs (CHAMPVA) is a comprehensive health care program in which the VA shares the cost of covered health care services and supplies with eligible beneficiaries."

VA requires enrollment verification for all CHAMPVA applicants. The DuckWeb on-line enrollment verification from the National Student Clearinghouse does not include everything required by that CHAMPVA. Contact the UO Office of the Registrar for help with this verification.

See CHAMPVA web page for more information about eligibility, benefits and other details.

Money Matters - Frequently Asked Questions

Where is my VA Money?

  • Have you turned in your Approved List of Courses (ALC) for the year?
  • Have you allowed enough time for processing? Chapters 30, 1606 and 1607 require 30-45 days for continuing certifications and 60-90 days for original applications. Chapter 35 requires 30-45 days for continuing certifications plus 7-14 business days to process and mail a check. Original applications require 90-120 days for processing.
  • Did you owe money due to an adjustment or termination of your certification?
  • Have you verified your certification on WAVE or by phone? (Chapter 30, 1606 and 1607).

An adjustment or termination was reported to the VA; now I have a debt. What are my options?

  • Most questions can be answered by going to the Debt Management Center web site.
  • Write a letter to the VA Regional Office explaining your mitigating circumstances (i.e. explain why the adjustment or termination was necessary). This may reduce your debt if accepted.
  • Write a letter requesting "a waiver of collection" and be sure to explain why the adjustment or termination was necessary. Use this phrase ("a waiver of collection") or it will be assumed you are explaining for mitigating circumstances. If your waiver is accepted it may eliminate your debt. Don't forget to follow directions on the Debt Management Center web site!
  • Call Debt Management at 1-800-827-0648 to set up a payment plan.
  • If you are receiving financial aid, contact your Financial Aid counselor and inquire about a budget adjustment.
  • An Emergency Short Term Loan for $300 and under can be requested from Student Billing within Business Affairs, on the first floor of Oregon Hall. Emergency Short Term Loans in larger amounts can be requested from Financial Aid on the second floor of Oregon Hall.
