Summer Parts of Term

During the summer term, the University of Oregon operates on multiple parts of terms, based on the actual dates that courses are offered. Coding courses into the correct part of term is necessary so that students have appropriate add/drop deadlines, tuition refunds for withdrawals, grade option change deadlines, etc., on a course-by-course basis. Correct parts of term also facilitate appropriate release of financial aid and veterans benefits to UO students and ensures compliance with university policies regarding course evaluations.

The Office of the Registrar’s Academic and Classroom Scheduling staff enters course data in Banner for all summer courses. Departments should always list the actual dates of their summer course offerings (and NOT list a part of term) when turning in their summer course offerings. RO staff will enter the actual course dates into Banner, and determine and enter the appropriate part of term.

The actual course dates and the part of term can be seen in Banner in SQASECT. Parts of term are also available in the Student Data Warehouse. Part of term codes are also displayed on the SWREGRP Schedule Proof report in Banner. It is not possible to search the online class schedule by part of term; however, the Registrar’s Office regularly posts a list of Zero Week courses (the link appears on classes.uoregon.edu or in the RO’s A-Z Index, click Z for Zero Week Courses).

There are approximately 250 possible parts of term. You can decode a part of term as follows:

Defining Part of Term Codes

For two-digit part of term codes

The first character (a letter) represents the week that the course starts and the second character (a number) represents the number of weeks that the course meets.

First Character of POT Second Character of POT
Z = starts in zero week 1 = course runs for 1 week
A = starts in week 1 2 = course runs for 2 weeks
B = starts in week 2 3 = course runs for 3 weeks
C = starts in week 3 4 = course runs for 4 weeks
H = starts in week 8 11 = course runs for 11 weeks

Examples:

Z2 is a two-week course that starts in zero week (Z)
A4 is a four-week course that starts in week 1 (A)
E3 is a three-week course that starts in week 5 (E)
K2 is a two-week course that starts in week 11 (K)

For three-digit part of term codes

The first character (a letter) represents the weekend that the course starts, the second digit is always a W to indicate that this is a weekend course; and the third character (a letter) represents the weekend that the course ends.

First Character of POT: Weekend that the course starts Second Character is always a W Third Character of POT: weekend that the course ends
A = weekend course starting at the end of week 1
W
A = weekend course ending at the end of week 1
B = weekend course starting at the end of week 1
W
C = weekend course ending at the end of week 3
E = weekend course starting at the end of week 5
W
F= weekend course ending at the end of week 6

Examples:

ZWZ is a weekend course that starts at the end of zero week (Z) and ends that same weekend (Z)
AWB is a weekend course that starts at the end of week one (A) and runs two weeks through the end of week two (B)
EWH is a weekend course that starts at the end of week five (E) and runs four weeks through the end of week 8 (H)

“Odd” Parts of Term

  • All Individualized Study courses are coded as part of term IS.
  • Three digit POT’s with a second character of "O" are reserved for Oregon Marine Biology courses in Charleston.

Summer “Finals”

Courses that are in part of term A8 and E4 end on Wednesday of Week 8; final exams are scheduled in two hour blocks on Thursday and Friday of Week 8. All other courses are expected to give the final exam on the last meeting day of the course.

Summer Course Evaluations

UO runs the course evaluation process three times throughout the summer: at the end of week 4, at the end of week 8; and at then end of week 11. Only courses of three or four weeks in duration, ending in week 4, 8, or 11 are included in the course evaluation process for summer.
