UO Online Course Evaluations
Your Feedback Matters!
The information students provide in course evaluations is extremely important.
- Faculty use information from course evaluations to improve their courses and teaching methods, and to determine whether course content is meeting the needs of their students.
- Department chairs review course evaluation data to assess both their faculty, and the value of courses offered in their department.
- University committees include course evaluation data as part of faculty reviews, to determine promotion and tenure.
- Other students use the course evaluation ratings available to them, to choose courses to add to their schedule.
University of Oregon evaluates all courses using an online system through CollegeNet. This system allows students to confidentially rate their UO learning experience. Two days after the deadline for faculty grade submission, the ratings and feedback from course evaluations become available to UO faculty and administrators.
Faculty can access their own course evaluations through the Course Evaluations menu on DuckWeb.
Beginning Fall 2007, the University of Oregon implemented an online course evaluation system purchased from CollegeNet, Inc., to replace the Scantron evaluation forms formerly in use.
The system was launched as a pilot for Fall 2007 and included all regular undergraduate and graduate courses in Math, Political Science, and Business (individualized study courses were excluded). A total of 373 courses taught by 191 faculty were included in this pilot group.
Current Scheduling of Evaluations
Beginning with the Winter 2008 term, all courses are evaluated using the online system each term, except overseas or individualized study courses. Summer varies slightly, because courses begin and end on odd schedules. In summer, we evaluate more than 95% of courses during each of four evaluation sessions scheduled during that term.
For students on the main campus, the system opens at midnight on the Friday (Wednesday in Fall term) before dead week and closes early Monday morning before finals begin. For Law Semester, evaluations are open for nine days immediately prior to the final exam period. University Senate legislation set these evaluation periods. Again, Summer term is different. When Course Evaluations Open
Students are notified via their UO e-mail when the online system opens, and are sent reminders during the evaluation period. You must have a UO email account set up, or you will not receive these reminders.
Students log into the course evaluation system through DuckWeb, and then pass securely through a portal to the CollegeNet servers, where their evaluation data is gathered and maintained per faculty legislation. Anonymity is protected, and access to the results tightly controlled through security permissions per faculty legislation.
During the evaluation period, students who have not completed or opted out of (declined) each of their evaluations are sent e-mail reminders, asking that they log in and finish their evaluations. Courses that have not yet been evaluated are listed on the reminders.
After Course Evaluations Close: Grade Withholding & Data Availability
Grades are collected and rolled to Academic History twice a day, 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. beginning Monday afternoon of Finals Week. Students who either answered or opted out of all of their evaluations will be able to see their grades as they come in during the grading period. Students who did not complete all of their evaluations will have to wait to access their grades and transcripts until the Friday following the final grading deadline (i.e., a week after finals conclude). All grades and transcripts from all terms are affected by the grade hold, not just those of the active term. After grades are processed and the grading system is closed at the end of each term or semester, student grade holds are lifted, making grades and transcripts again available to all students.
After grades are processed, online course evaluation data becomes available to faculty. Faculty are notified via e-mail when reports are ready for viewing. Faculty log into the system through DuckWeb, clicking on Course Evaluations in the main menu, which allows them to pass securely through to the CollegeNet servers to view their evaluations.

UO uses two versions of the following twelve questions, one for "Lecture" type courses and a second version revised for use in zero-credit Labs/+Discussion CRNs.
