DuckWeb Registration Messages

Common Messages Seen while Registering in DuckWeb

Many courses have restrictions that are checked during the registration process. Below is a guide to the messages you may see during registration in DuckWeb, and what can be done to resolve the issue.

Class Restriction

Message: This course is restricted by class standing (e.g. Freshman, Junior, etc.). You do not meet the restriction.

Why you got this message: You did not meet the restrictions for the course you attempted to register for because the course is restricted by class standing.

Solution: Check the restrictions as listed in the Class Schedule or in the "Search for Open Classes" link in DuckWeb (click on the CRN to view the detailed information about a course). If a restriction has a date where it automatically ends, it will be listed there. You can register for the course at that time, if space is available.

If you think that you have a legitimate reason to register for this course despite the restriction, you can contact the academic department responsible for the course to request an override. The appropriate contact may be listed on the CRN’s detailed view. If no specific contact is listed, use the contact information for the academic department, shown at the top right of that page.

If you do obtain permission, the department will authorize you to register; it is then your responsibility to register for the course in DuckWeb. Type the CRN(s) into the fields at the bottom of the Add/Drop page and submit.

College Restriction

Message: This course is restricted by college (e.g. College of Arts & Sciences, etc.). You do not meet the restriction.

Why you got this message: You did not meet the restrictions for the course you attempted to register for because the class is restricted by the college that your primary major is from (e.g. Accounting is in the Lundquist College of Business, not the College of Arts & Sciences)

Departmental Approval

Message: Departmental Approval

Why you got this message: You tried to register for a course that requires departmental approval.

Solution: Check the requirements as listed in the Class Schedule or in the "Search for Open Classes" link in DuckWeb (click on the CRN to view the detailed information about a course). If a required approval has a date where it automatically ends, it will be listed there. You can register for the course at that time, if space is available.

If you would like to request the approval, you can contact the department responsible for the approval to request an override. The appropriate contact may be listed on the CRN’s detailed view. If no specific contact is listed, use the contact information for the academic department, shown at the top right of that page. The specific procedure for obtaining approval will depend on the department.

If you do obtain permission, the department will authorize you to register; it is then your responsibility to register for the course in DuckWeb. Type the CRN(s) into the fields at the bottom of the Add/Drop page and submit.

Dropping Below Full-Time Status After Term Has Begun

Message: You cannot drop below full-time status using DuckWeb.

Why you got this message: You are an international student or an athlete who tried to make changes to your registration. Because you cannot drop below full-time status after the term has begun, changes to your registration in DuckWeb are prohibited, even if you were previously approved or are not dropping below full-time status.

Solution: International students should contact the Office of International Affairs, 300W Oregon Hall, (541) 346-3206. Athletes should contact Support Services for Student Athletes, Mac Court, (541) 346-5428. Staff in these offices will determine if you can drop below full-time credits or make another change and, if approved, send documentation to the Office of the Registrar for processing.

If you are concerned about an upcoming registration deadline, email the Registrar’s Office, detailing the registration changes that you wish to make. This will document that you intended to make the change before the deadline. You must still follow up with the relevant office(s) as detailed above.

Dropping Last Class Using Add/Drop Menu

Message: You cannot drop your last class using this "Add/Drop Classes" menu option…

Why you got this message: You are registered for a term and you tried to drop the last class from your schedule using the Add/Drop menu.

Solution: If you intend to drop and not complete any classes at the University of Oregon this term, you should click on the link Completely Withdraw from the Term(s) in the Registration menu in DuckWeb. If you have questions about implications for the current term or the future, contact the Office of Academic Advising, 101 Oregon Hall, 541-346-3211 (8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday).

If you intend to drop your only course and add a different course in its place, first note the CRN of the course you want to add. Then use the "Exchange Sections" menu item in the Registration Menu. To exchange two courses, select the CRN you wish to drop from the list and enter the CRN you wish to add in the field provided. Press the Exchange Sections button to complete the transaction. You will not be dropped from your existing CRN unless you are successfully able to add the other new CRN. This feature works for any one-to-one CRN exchange you would like to process: e.g. WR 121 for a different WR 121 or WR 121 for MATH 111.

Duplicate Course

Message: This course cannot be taken twice in the same term. You are already registered for a duplicate course (CRN #####).

Why you got this message: You tried to add a course that is already on your schedule. DuckWeb will only let you register for this course one time.

Solution: If you are trying to change sections of the same course, first note the CRN of the course you want to add.

If you think you should be able to register for the course twice in the same term (Music Performance or courses with different topics are examples), check with the academic department offering the course for assistance.

Full Class

Message: This course is full.

Why you got this message: You tried to register for a course that is full.

Solution: Use Search for Open Classes to see if there are other sections available and register for a different section. Or continue to occasionally check DuckWeb to see if another student has dropped the course you want, and add if you find an opening. Or select a different course.

If you want to discuss taking a course that is already full and you have tried to add the course through DuckWeb, contact the academic department that is offering the course. Only academic departments can override enrollment limits. Many departments do not allow enrollment overrides, and overrides cannot be given if it would exceed the room capacity or the class has a waitlist.

If you do obtain permission, the department will authorize you to register; it is then your responsibility to register for the course in DuckWeb. Type the CRN(s) into the fields at the bottom of the Add/Drop page and submit.

Instructor Approval

Message: Instructor Approval

Why you got this message: You tried to register for a course that requires instructor approval.

Solution: Check the requirements as listed in the Class Schedule or in the "Search for Open Classes" link in DuckWeb (click on the CRN to view the detailed information about a course). If a required approval has a date where it automatically ends, it will be listed there. You can register for the course at that time, if space is available.

If you would like to request the approval, you can contact the instructor to request an override. The instructor’s contact information should be listed on the CRN’s detailed view. The specific procedure for obtaining approval will depend on the department.

If the instructor approves, they will communicate that to the academic department offering the course. The department will authorize you to register; it is then your responsibility to register for the course in DuckWeb. Type the CRN(s) into the fields at the bottom of the Add/Drop page and submit.

Level Restriction

Message: This course is restricted by level (e.g. graduate students only, etc.). You do not meet the restriction.

Why you got this message: You did not meet the restrictions for the course you attempted to register for because the course is restricted by level (e.g. Undergraduate, Graduate, or Law).

Solution: Look for a course that is appropriate to your student type. Undergraduate courses are numbered 499 and lower. Graduate courses are numbered 500 and higher.

If you are an undergraduate who wants to enroll in a graduate-level course, please note that registration in a graduate-level course requires students to meet class and GPA requirements, and receive permission from the Graduate School. The student must make this request to the Graduate School before the beginning of the term of registration and return the approved form to the Office of the Registrar before the add deadline.

Major, Minor or Concentration Restriction

Message: This course is restricted by Major, Minor, or Concentration; you do not meet the restriction.

Why you got this message: You did not meet the restrictions for the course you attempted to register for because the course is restricted by major, minor, or concentration. Depending how the course was setup, a course might "include" or "exclude" certain majors, minors or concentrations.

The contact information for the academic department is shown at the top right of that page.

If you do obtain permission, the department will authorize you to register; it is then your responsibility to register for the course in DuckWeb. Type the CRN(s) into the fields at the bottom of the Add/Drop page and submit.

If you are interested in pursuing a major, minor, or concentration that is required for registration, you should contact the academic department that offers that major, minor or concentration to declare your intentions. This will not be immediate; the department can opt to give an override for specific CRNs while the change is being processed.

Maximum Credits Exceeded

Message: This course exceeds the maximum credits for which you are allowed to register.

Why you got this message: You tried to register for more credits than you are allowed to register for. Undergraduate, graduate, law students, and community education students all have different credit limits and, for some students, different dates at which those limits are raised.

Solution: Prioritize registering for courses that are more important to you; consider discussing this with your academic advisor. Refer to Enrollment & Study Load Limits for specific information about the maximum enrollment limits and dates that apply to your student type.

Prerequisite or Test Score

Message: You have not satisfied the prerequisites for this course.

Why you got this message: You did not meet the prerequisite for the course you attempted to register for.

Solution: Check the prerequisites:

  • Listed in the Class Schedule or
  • "Search for Open Classes" link in DuckWeb (click on the CRN to view the detailed information about a course) or
  • Review the Math Placement Exam requirement

If you do not meet the stated prerequisite, you must complete the prerequisite before taking the class. If you are currently registered at UO for a prerequisite course in an earlier term, this will be taken into account, but you must complete it before the course begins.

Note that some departments opt to present prerequisites in a simplified form; the listing may say that "Course A" is required, but the department may have set up the registration system to allow "Course A or B" or "Courses A, B and C", etc. Equally, sometimes prerequisites are listed but not enforced by the registration system. It is your responsibility to confirm that you have met the requirements prior to the start of the course.

If you think that you have a legitimate reason to register for this course despite not meeting the prerequisite, or if you believe you have satisfied a prerequisite, you can contact the academic department responsible for the course to request an override. The contact information for the academic department is shown at the top right of that page.

If you do obtain permission, the department will authorize you to register; it is then your responsibility to register for the course in DuckWeb. Type the CRN(s) into the fields at the bottom of the Add/Drop page and submit.

Repeated Course

Message: Course repetition restriction. Please see your Advisor if you have any questions.

Why you got this message: You attempted to register for a course that has a repetition restriction.

Reference: UO Course Repeat Policy

Solution: Effective Fall 2019, undergraduate students are not permitted to register for a:

  • nonrepeatable course they are currently registered in
  • nonrepeatable course they have already earned a C or a Pass (P/P*) or better
  • nonrepeatable course attempted three or more times
  • repeatable course completed to either limit for credits or number of times the course may be repeated

This applies to courses taken at UO and transferred from other institutions.

An incomplete (I) or a missing grade (X) are not considered to be final; you will not be able to register for the course again unless these are replaced with a final grade lower than C or Pass. You should contact the instructor for the course with the I or X to resolve the grade.

If you think you have a legitimate reason to register, contact your advisor to inquire about the support for a repeat.

Reserved Seats

Message: Remaining seats are reserved. You must register for a different section or course.

Why you got this message: You tried to add a course that has reserved seats which are not available to you. Some classes have seats which are held for specific student cohorts, such as Freshman Interest Groups (FIGs). These are typically noted on the detailed view of the CRN, accessible by clicking on the CRN in the Class Schedule or in the "Search for Open Classes" link in DuckWeb.

Solution: Look for a different section of the course with open seats, or a different class.

Time Conflict

Message: This course has a time conflict with CRN #####. Select another CRN or rearrange your schedule to add this course.

Why you got this message: You tried to add a course that meets at the same time as another course already on your schedule. Students are not permitted to register for two courses that meet at the same time.

Solution: Select a different section of the course that you want (one at a different time), rearrange your courses so there is no time conflict, or choose a different course entirely.

Undergraduate students are generally not permitted to register for two courses that meet at the same time (exceptions will be considered for overlaps up to 15 minutes). Law students may request an exception to this rule (contact the Law School Registrar for more information).

Too Many Attempts Made to Register

Message: You have made too many attempts to register this term.

Why you got this message: You tried an excessive number of times to register for classes (hundreds of course adds, drops, etc.). Normal course registration activity can easily be accommodated within the set limit. Please note that utilizing computer programs to register for courses is not an appropriate use of the registration system.

Solution: Once you reach the limit for your registration attempts, it is not possible for you to do any further registration for the term. All subsequent adds, drops, credit changes, grading option changes, etc, need to be handled by the Office of the Registrar. Before you get to this point, understand how to use the registration system so that you don't make a lot of registration changes. See your academic advisor before you register so you can plan your schedule, know what courses you should be taking and how they will fit into your degree program. Use your Degree Audit to track your degree progress.

Two-part course

Message: This is a two-part course; you must register for both the lecture, and the discussion, lab, or tutorial.

Why you got this message: This is a course that has both a lecture and an associated discussion, lab or tutorial section; you tried to add only one part of the class.

Solution: Choose both a lecture section and a discussion, lab, or tutorial section (choose one from the list directly below the lecture). Note that both sections will have the same course number (e.g. CH 227). The lecture will be listed with the full course title; associated CRNs will have titles like "+ Lab".

If using "Add/Drop Classes", enter both CRNs and press submit changes. If using "Search for Open Sections", check the box for both CRNs, then press the submit button.

If you have been notified that you reached the top of the waitlist for your discussion, lab, or tutorial, you need to register for that CRN and the lecture CRN at the same time. Choose "Add CRN" from the drop-down list to the left of the waitlisted CRN. Enter the CRN for the associated lecture into the field at the bottom of the screen. Then click "Submit Changes".

Waitlist Available

Message: Class is full. There are ## student(s) on the waitlist. To join, select "Waitlist" under "Action" and submit.

Why you got this message: You are trying to register for a course that is full but has space available on the waitlist.

Solution: If you would like to add yourself to the waitlist, select "waitlist" from the drop-down list to the left of the waitlisted CRN, then click "Submit Changes". If you do not want to add yourself to the waitlist, select "None" in the action menu and click "Submit Changes". For more information about waitlisting, see How to Use Waitlisting on DuckWeb.

It is not permitted to waitlist multiple CRNs for the same course, or remain registered in one CRN while waitlisted for another section.

Note that you may not be able to add yourself to a waitlist for a CRN if you have previously been registered or waitlisted for it and then dropped. Students are expected to waitlist for their preferred CRN rather than switching between multiple CRNs for the same course. Contact the Office of the Registrar for assistance if you find that you cannot select the "Waitlist" option from the dropdown menu.

Waitlist Full

Message: This class is full. The waitlist is also full.

Why you got this message: You tried to register for a course that is full and has a full waitlist.

Solution: Use Search for Open Classes to see if there are other sections available and register for a different section. Or continue to occasionally check DuckWeb to see if another student has dropped the course you want, and add it if you find an opening. Or select a different course.
