Grading System

The grade chart shows which grades are used, and defines the number of quality points students receive for the letter grades earned. Quality points are used to calculate grade point averages (GPA). Marks of P, N, I AU, and Y do not count in the GPA computation. Students may use the GPA calculator to help them estimate their future cumulative or term GPA.

Grading Options

Courses may have different grading options, or grade modes:

  • Graded only
  • Pass-No Pass only
  • Optional grading (student chooses Graded or P/N)

Details for each course are published in the class schedule. Courses with optional grading will be graded by default, but students may choose to change the mode to Pass/No Pass. You can change the grade mode in DuckWeb. When a class has a lecture and an associated discussion or lab, the grade mode change is only made to the lecture portion.

The deadline to change grade mode is week seven for fall, winter, and spring term.

First-Term Grade Forgiveness

The first-term grade forgiveness policy helps students who struggle to pass all courses in their first term. Students can read about the policy in the UO catalog and should meet with their academic advisors for additional guidance and support.
