The Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) Code was developed by the US Department of Education and helps track programs of study across the US. Changing CIP codes may impact financial aid, international students, census, government reporting, and funding. Thus, the process for changing CIP codes is very intentional.
We change CIP codes when programs have made significant changes to their curriculum. Departments consult with the Office of the Registrar regarding CIP Code changes and complete a request form. Once changes are requested, a designee from the Office of the Provost will consult with the Office of the Registrar and the Office of Institutional Research to review the request. When changes are approved, they go into effect the next fall quarter.
